How does cold weather affect my performance and my bat?
Cold can be relentless, and knowing how to preserve your bat in these conditions is crucial if you want not only to finish your season strong but also to start the next one with your favorite tool still in one piece. Contrary to what you might imagine, the cold does not directly affect your bat's abilities. What it actually does, is that it subtly changes the behavior of players in the batter's box, which can, over time, greatly affect the condition of your equipment.
How does cold affect players?
During games in cold weather, the chill quickly sets into the hands, often causing players to adjust their swing. They tend to open up earlier, fearing to get "jammed"—a sharp pain in the hands caused by poor contact with the ball. This rushing can lead to more frequent hits at the bat's tip, which is your bat's worst enemy!
When the ball hits the tip of the bat, it drastically increases the chances of the handle breaking. Therefore, the key to keeping your bat in good condition is to maintain your natural swing and not change your habits, even when it's cold.
Caring for your bat after the game
Post-game maintenance is just as important as using the bat on the field. A common mistake is placing the bat near a direct heat source, like a radiator, which will dry out the wood, making it more fragile. Be mindful, the storage space that was perfect during the summer may not be ideal as the season ends and we start heating our homes again.
During the offseason, it is also advised not to leave the bat lying horizontally for too long, as this can warp it. A warped bat means that the handle can twist, affecting your grip and the feel of your swings in future games.
Our tips for keeping your bat healthy in winter
- Keep your swing: Don’t adjust your swing out of fear of the cold, as this could harm the longevity of your bat.
- Avoid direct heat sources: Never leave your bat near a radiator or any other intense heat source.
- Store it properly: Make sure to store it vertically or on a flat surface, but don’t leave it lying horizontally for too long.
By following these simple tips, you can not only avoid breaking your bat but also extend its lifespan, even in the coldest weather conditions.
