Production's Blog: The Right Length to Weight Ratio for a Bat
What should be the weight and length of the bat I get? This is definitely a frequently asked question. Often, people ask me: "My boy is 10 years old, is quite tall and strong, so what length and what weight do you suggest? In fact, the answer is simple: you have to go with the longest bat possible and the heaviest you can swing. Indeed, the longer the bat is, the more the principle of leverage will come into effect. And this means more power. Also, physics demonstrates this very well: the heavier the stick is, denser the wood will be, and this leads to more power and more resistance. A heavier bat will result in a better weight transfer to the ball, so, again, more power.
So, the choice of a bat is that simple? Not so fast. I mentioned it in the previous blog, but I will repeat: the baseball swing is very complex. It is a combination of several factors including eye/hand coordination, weight transfer, bat speed, and resistance. It is also important to remember that it is essential to hit the ball as often as possible on the "sweet spot" of the bat. Taking all this into consideration, we must therefore choose the size and weight of our bat accordingly not to diminish the factors mentioned earlier.
And who is the best person to find the ideal length and perfect weight for your swing? Yes, that’s you! How? By trying a few combinations before finding the right one. It is always better to start with a longer bat, because you can always "cut" it a little bit, and opt for a little lighter. By hitting balls and facing pitchers, we will be able to go up a notch in the length of your bat and take it a little heavier, always without affecting our eye/hand coordination, our bat speed, and so on. We always want to keep in mind that the first goal is to hit the ball on the “sweet spot” as much as possible. If the bat is too long and too heavy for us, it will be difficult to hit the ball with consistency and power.
In short, no matter how old, how strong or how tall we are, there is this certain length and weight that will be the right fit. Now, you just have to find it by hitting as many balls as possible and making sure to make contact on the "sweet spot" on a regular basis.
On this, have fun hitting balls and we talk again soon!
